We are...

A Community Resource

We are Not A Yacht Club.

We are Sailing Center Chesapeake.

And we want YOU to come join our community today!

No matter your age or ability, we have a place for you at SCC.

In 1999, Stovy Brown and the 501(c)3 organization Southern Maryland Sailing Foundation brought high school sailing to Southern Maryland. A decade later, in 2009 we outgrew our initial home on Solomons Island, moved south into St. Mary’s County, and created the SMSF’s operational body, Sailing Center Chesapeake.

10 years on, SCC is still supported by the Foundation, which funds the high-capital equipment involved in sailing. We have a thriving high school competitive program. Thanks to the kind patronage of the owner, we have operated out of Tall Timbers Marina since 2011.

In 2019, we piloted a summer youth racing program on the CBYRA circuit. That initial success has allowed us to plan to continue that program, offering year-round competitive opportunities for our junior sailors!

Sailing Center Chesapeake is currently located at Tall Timbers Marina in Tall Timbers, MD. We are situated between Herring Creek and the Potomac River. Most of our sailing programs take place in Herring Creek, which provides good sailing conditions in a protected area. We also have the option of sailing in the Potomac River when sailing conditions are more favorable there. Our location provides excellent sailing opportunities regardless of the weather!

Our current fleet of boats includes 4 inflatable Zodiac powerboats; 18 FJ dinghies; 6 c420 dinghies; 2 Lasers; 12 prams; and various canoes, kayaks, and paddleboards.

We take pride in fulfilling our motto, "A Community Resource". We could not operate without the continued support of a myriad of volunteers, who range from parents of sailors, to business owners, to retirees who enjoy an excuse to get out on the water!

We have only one paid staff member, Coach Josh. All other "employees" of SCC are paid only in a sense of pride and ownership in our real Community Resource!

We need many talents to keep our programs running. From simple but time-consuming tasks like shore parent at a high school practice, to organizing a fundraising night at a local restaurant, to planning our incredibly successful annual awards banquet, our volunteers do it all! Please consider joining us today, by contacting our Executive Director at director@somdsailing.org.

Thank You!

We strongly believe in providing our community’s youth the ability to experience the water surrounding their home. Because we think all students should have these opportunities, we maintain affordable pricing for all our programs. Additionally, the Foundation provides financial aid scholarships for SCC programs on an individual basis. For information, contact the SMSF treasurer at treasurer@somdsailing.org.
